GDAL (Geospatial Data Abstraction Library) is a library for translating raster geospatial data formats. It is released under an X/MIT style free software license by the Open Source Geospatial Foundation.

The library provides a single asbstract data model which can be transparently adopted by the calling applications dealing with one or more of the formats supported by GDAL. Several commandline utilities for data translation and processing allow bash scripting enhanced support for geospatial data formats.
