#Iranelection is a hashtag that is primarily used to channel messages regarding the 2009 Iranian presidential election and the subsequent protests (also known as the 14 Khordad protests, according to the Iranian calendar). This hashtag became widely watched due to the crackdown on Iranian protesters by the state military and plainclothes militia, as a large number (maybe hundreds) of Iranian or Iranian-embedded users of Twitter used it to provide any information on the protests and counteroffensives which they could provide under the weight of the crackdown, which included a significant throttling on Iranian Internet access. Because of the extensive usage of the #iranelection hashtag by Twitter users in Iran, the Internet portion of the protests and activism became known as the "#iranelection controversy", hashtag revolution or the Twitter revolution.
